Farhan, along with his mother and 5-year-old sister, lives in the slum community of Bhiwandi. Farhan has never been enrolled in school. His mother works from home as a seamstress, earning less than $2 per day. Farhan's parents divorced a year ago because of his father's alcohol and drug abuse. With no support from the rest of her family, Farhan's mother decided she could not manage the house on her own with the income she earned and could not enroll her children in school before Udaan opened.

When asked what he wants to become when he grows up, Farhan said he would not send his mother to work, and he would teach his sister, and he wants to become a successful man. Farhan desperately needs a sponsor to support him in continuing his education.
