Age 7

Fatima lives in the slums of Bhiwandi with her family. Fatima's father is an alcoholic, is abusive, and suffers from an illness. He works as a porter but only goes to work sometimes. Fatima's mother started pearl and bead stringing from home so she could feed and support her children. Fatima has two older brothers attending school nearby and a younger sister at home with their mother.

Fatima's mother was thankful to enroll Fatima in Udaan; she is an intelligent girl and likes to learn new things. Fatima's dream is to become a doctor so she can help her parents, but she needs a sponsor to continue her education without worrying about her family's financial state.
