Saima lives with her parents and 3 siblings in Bhiwandi. Her father earns around $6 daily, which is insufficient to run the home and provide for the children's education. Saima's mother started doing pearl-stringing work at home to help pay the bills. Before Udaan, Saima had given up on her education to help her mother with pearl-stringing work.

At Udaan, she expressed a desire to learn sewing and computers. She dreams of becoming a police officer when she grows up so that she can help people when they come to her with problems. Her family struggles to pay rent, so she wants to buy a new house for her family and help her brother and sister become successful in their studies.
