Age 11
Alka lives with her family and 6 sisters in the slum community of Bhiwandi. Both of Alka's parents are aged and are struggling to work. Alka's father works as a driver, and his daily income is around $6. Alka's older sister and mother work at the same factory, each of them earning $2.50 a day. Alka's mother accompanies her sister to work because the area where her sister works is unsafe for girls. Alka's parents worry about their daughters' safety in their community.
Before moving to Bhiwandi, Alka's family lived in the village where she studied until the second grade, but since moving, none of the daughters had been in school. Since attending Udaan, apart from getting a good education, Alka desires to learn computers and sewing and start her own business at home.
