Nisha

Age 17

Nisha lives in a small house at Bhiwandi with her 6 siblings and mother. When Nisha's father died, she was only 8 years old, and her mother started working as a janitor for a company earning $2.50 per day. Her mother also started pearl beading work from home, where the children also helped and made about 50-75 cents a day. Her mother worked very hard to send the children to school to complete their education, but the financial strain of their situation eventually forced all of them to drop out of school to help provide for the family. Nisha's mother arranged a marriage for Nisha's 14-year-old sister, borrowing dowry money. But within 2 years, Nisha's sister was sent back home by her husband's family in demand of additional dowry, which they could not provide. This stress resulted in Nisha dropping out of school to help the family.

When Udaan started in the Bhiwandi slums, Nisha enrolled in hopes of continuing her education and doing some job skill training to fulfill her dreams. Nisha needs a sponsor to provide for her education and future.
